The African draws for the 2018 World Cup hold in Cairo today, and fans of the Super Eagles have made their voices heard in a Poll
Nigeria fans are keen to avoid the Desert Foxes of Algeria in today’s Africa draws for the Fifa 2018 World Cup Russia, with many seeing West African rivals Senegal as the least threatening pick of the Pot 1 teams.
Algeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Tunisia and Senegal are the teams in Pot 1, with Nigeria’s Pot 2 seeding meaning the Super Eagles will face one of those teams when the race for World Cup qualification begins in October. In determining which Pot 1 team Nigeria fans would most like the Super Eagles to avoid, Algeria, who impressed at the 2014 World Cup, led the poll with an overwhelming majority (41%) of the votes, while Senegal, considered the easiest opponents on paper had 9% of the vote.
Reigning African champions Cote d’Ivoire came second with 21% of the votes, perhaps unsurprising given their recent dominance over the Super Eagles, despite the Stephen Keshi-led 2013 side defeated the Elephants en route to victory in South Africa.
Ghana and Tunisia are also seen as relatively favourable sides to draw with 15% and 13% of the votes.
Algeria are the top-ranked team in Africa according to the latest Fifa rankings, with the Nabil Neghiz-tutored side winning four of their last six games, including two seven-goal hauls against Tanzania and Ethiopia.
Boasting the services of the mercurial Riyad Mahrez and an able supporting cast in Yacine Brahimi, Islam Slimani and Sofiane Feghouli, Algeria are Africa’s most-feared side. Furthermore, the electric atmosphere at the Stade du 5 Juillet, 1962 makes away games an unpalatable experience for visiting teams.
Senegal, on the other hand, are considered the easier team, at least on paper, despite being seven places above Nigeria in June’s Fifa rankings. The Super Eagles have a superior head-to-head against the Lions of Teranga, winning eight of the 16 meetings between the two sides, losing just three times.
The draws take place in Cairo at 4 p.m Nigeria time.
